Synology - Build and Configuration
Last Updated 4 days ago

In order to build and configure your NAS to your unique requirements, we need some information, and that is detailed here, broken into sections. If you are unsure about any of this please speak to your Account Manger who will explain it and help you choose.

NETWORK

Field Description
Name The name of the NAS as it will appear on the network, often a company name or department name. Alpha-Numeric, no spaces or symbols.
IP Address The static IP Address of the NAS
Subnet The Subnet for the IP Address above
Gateway The default gateway or router for your NAS to reach the internet
DNS Server The IP Address(es) of your DNS Servers

USERS

For every user on the NAS that we pre-configure, we need to have a
USERNAME - Alpha Only, No Spaces, No Symbols
FULLNAME - The full name
EMAIL - The email Address
PASSWORD - At least 10 Characters, Alpha-Numeric and £$!&^ Symbols. If not supplied we will auto-generate a strong one. e.g.

GROUPS

Every NAS has two default groups, Administrators and Users, but you can have more, and groups can make it easier to manage large numbers of users with group-able access needs. For example, if you intend to have a shared folder for the Finance Department, You can request a group for FINANCE, and then assign all the finance department users into that group. Then you simply need to grant access to the shared folder FINANCE to the group FINANCE. If you do not need groups then you can simply use ‘Users’ and assign access permissions per-user.

Please provide a list of Administrators (Can view all and change all on the NAS)
Please provide a list of Groups (If any - Alpha Only, No spaces or symbols)
Please provide a list of Users, and optionally their membership of any groups provided.

DISKS

Depending on the number of physical drives, you can have either Mirrors (in pairs) which provides 1:1 protection (One drive can fail), or RAID (either one drive can fail, or two drives can fail). If you have more than 4 drives then SHR-2 is strongly recommended, and provides strong protection allowing two drives to fail and still continue functioning, but this is your NAS and it is your choice. It is very hard to change this later on so please choose wisely.

Please indicate the RAID configuration for your NAS: RAID1, RAID5, SHR-1, SHR-2 ?

VOLUMES

Depending on your chosen storage, we can either create one large storage area, or divide it up into smaller areas. Even if you have it all as one large area, you can still impose quotas on shared folders to control their growth, but in advanced use cases having multiple volumes can be a benefit. We recommend BTRFS as the filesystem for your volume(s) but it is your choice and ext4 is available as an alternative.

Please describe the volume layout for your NAS: Single Volume, or Multiple giving sizes and formats.

SHARES

Storage is divided into Shares, called Shared Folders in Synology land, and each of these Shares can have access permissions against them, that is, some users can access them, some can access them but cannot change anything, and some cannot access them. Administrators can always access everything.

Please provide a list of Shares (Alpha-Numeric, No Spares, No Symbols), a Description for each, and whilst Users, and Groups need; Full Access or Read only Access. Everyone else will have No Access. e.g.

SHARE DESCRIPTION RW RO
ACCOUNTS Accounts Department JOHN, BOB, SARAH JOE
SALES Sales Department ALAN, LILLY, JACKY--

PACKAGES

Please detail any packages you would like pre-configured and the required configuration. This is not necessary and you can do this yourself when you receive the NAS but if we can do some of it for you then we will.
