Connecting a UPS to your NAS
Installing a New CyberPower UPS for Your Synology NAS
Unpacking and Initial Setup
- Unpack the UPS
- Carefully remove all packaging materials, ensuring that you do not damage any components.
- Inspect Components
- Check that all included parts are present: UPS unit, power cord, USB cable, user manual, and any accessories.
Connecting Mains Power
- Plug in the Mains Cable
- Locate the mains input on your Synology NAS (this is usually a standard three-pin UK plug).
- Gently insert the power cable into the UPS.
- Plug the other end of the power cable into the mains socket, ensuring it is securely connected.
- Connect to the UPS
- Power the Synology NAS via the UPS by connecting the mains input directly to the UPS unit.
Connecting the USB Cable
- USB Connection
- Locate the USB output on your UPS.
- Connect one end of the provided USB cable into this outlet.
- Plug the other end of the USB cable into an available USB port on your Synology NAS (it is recommended to use a high-speed USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port for optimal performance).
Setting Up the UPS in Synology DSM
- Access Synology DSM
- Open your web browser and navigate to your Synology NAS’s IP address.
- Log In
- Enter your username and password when prompted.
- Navigate to System Settings
- Go to
Control Panel>System>Power Management.
- Configure UPS Settings
- Click on the
UPStab. - Check if Synology detects the connected USB cable and displays the appropriate model name of your UPS.
- Enable UPS Monitoring
- Ensure that the
Enable UPS monitoringoption is checked.
- Set Up Backup Timeouts (Optional)
- Configure the system to safely shut down in case of power failure by adjusting the backup timeout values under
UPS.
Proper Shutdown Procedure
- Shut Down NAS Safely
- Log out and restart your Synology DSM.
- Navigate to
Control Panel>System>Shutdown.
- Properly Power Off the UPS
- Once the system has shut down completely, turn off the power to both the Synology NAS and the UPS.
- Disconnect Cables Safely
- Unplug the USB cable from the Synology NAS.
- Turn off the mains supply to your Synology NAS via the UPS.
