What do I need to self-host

Requirements to self-host a FreePBX behind NAT:

WAN

  • Static IP Address: Ensure your router is configured with a static public IP address. This allows external devices to connect to your FreePBX instance reliably. (All GEN Internet connections provide static addressing as standard.)
  • DNS so that your switch can have a dns A record. (Free DNS is provided for GEN Customers)

ROUTER

  • Port Forwarding for TCP and UDP: Configure your router to forward necessary ports (e.g., SIP at 5060, RTP/RTCP at 10000-20000) to the internal IP address of your FreePBX server.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Enable QoS on your router to prioritise VoIP traffic, ensuring low latency and jitter.

LAN

  • Sufficient LAN Bandwidth: Ensure your local network has adequate bandwidth to handle the expected call load without causing latency or packet loss. With RTP latency has a real impact on call quality.

HARDWARE

  • Processor: A modern quad-core processor is recommended for better performance.
  • Memory (RAM): At least 2GB of RAM, with 4GB being preferable for smoother operation.
  • Storage: For basic setups, at least 128GB SSD is advised. Additional storage may be required for extensive call recording or other data.
  • Call Recording Storage: Adequate storage should be allocated for storing recorded calls, ensuring compliance with local regulations and business needs.

SERVICES

  • SIP Trunks: For larger users (over 250,000 minutes per month): Direct SIP trunking can significantly enhance reliability and lower costs. GEN can provide this service.
  • Smaller users: We are simply not setup for smaller users, but we work with a small group of trusted parters for reliable SIP trunks.
  • Technical Support: Consider engaging with GEN for setup assistance or ongoing support if you encounter issues during installation or operation. Our support prices are very reasonable and upfront. There are no long term contracts and you can pay per use. Our rates are available on the website and you're looking at "Voice Support".

By following these guidelines, you can successfully self-host FreePBX behind NAT, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
