Call Waiting allows you to receive a second incoming call while you are already on an active call. When a second call comes in, you will typically hear a short tone, and the caller will hear a standard ringing tone until you answer or it goes to voicemail.
You can manage Call Waiting from your FreePBX extension using specific feature codes. These codes are dialled directly from your handset or softphone during an active call or when the phone is idle.
Turning Call Waiting On/Off:
To turn Call Waiting on or off for your extension, you will use the following feature codes:
- Turn Call Waiting On:
- Pick up your handset or open your softphone dialler.
- Dial
*70. - You will hear an audio confirmation that Call Waiting has been activated.
- Turn Call Waiting Off:
- Pick up your handset or open your softphone dialler.
- Dial
*71. - You will hear an audio confirmation that Call Waiting has been deactivated.
Responding to a Waiting Call (during an active call):
If Call Waiting is active and you receive a second call while on the phone, you can manage it using the following steps:
- To answer the second call and put the first call on hold:
- Press the 'Flash' or 'R' (Recall) button on your handset. On a softphone, this might be a specific button or a dial code.
- Dial
2. - You are now speaking to the second caller, and the first caller is on hold.
- To switch between the active and held call:
- Press the 'Flash' or 'R' button on your handset.

2. - You will switch back to the other call. Repeat this to toggle between calls.
- To end the active call and connect to the waiting call:
- Hang up your current call.
- The phone should then ring with the waiting call if the system is configured to do so, or the waiting call may disconnect if not answered promptly. Most systems will connect you automatically to the waiting call after the first call ends.
Important Notes:
- These feature codes are standard FreePBX codes. If your system administrator has customised the feature codes, they might be different.
- Some softphones may have integrated buttons for managing Call Waiting, offering an alternative to dialling the codes. Refer to your softphone's documentation.
- The exact behaviour and tone sounds may vary slightly depending on your specific FreePBX configuration and handset model.
